How to Become a Lutheran

The Lutheran Church does not engage in proselytizing among Christians, either in Russia or in other parts of the world. However, it is active in missionary work among non-Christians. Unlike sects that aggressively seek new followers, Lutherans—though happy to welcome newcomers—do not actively try to recruit anyone. Studying the Bible? Yes. Becoming a Christian? Yes. But becoming a Lutheran? That is not a requirement. The desire must come from the person themselves.

So, how can you become a Lutheran if you have sincerely decided to do so? In reality, it’s quite simple, and it depends on your current status.

The first thing the pastor will ask about is Baptism. If you are already a Christian, you will be asked which denomination you belong to or previously belonged to. If you are Orthodox, Catholic, or Anglican, you will not need to undergo Baptism again. Other denominations—if they can be called that—and if they use the same baptismal formula as Lutherans, Orthodox, and Catholics, can also be received without Baptism. However, if another formula was used, such as among Baptists or Pentecostals, you will need to receive Baptism according to the proper formula. Baptism is also necessary for those who are not Christian—that is, those who have never been baptized.

The next step will be studying the Catechism and attending the Mass and community gatherings. This is important because every person should know the Faith they are professing—at least at a basic level. It is recommended to become familiar with Martin Luther’s Small Catechism. If you wish to go further, study the Bible and the Book of Concord. The pastor, as well as fellow parishioners, will gladly answer your questions.

If you are Orthodox, Catholic, or Anglican, you will not need to go through Confirmation. However, for those who have recently been baptized and have studied the basics of the Faith, Confirmation (Chrismation) is required.

After this comes confession, for which you should prepare in advance. Some congregations practice public confession—you may be invited to speak about your sins before the entire community. And if you previously belonged to another church, you may be asked to renounce certain differences in beliefs—for example, recognizing some rituals as sacraments, the veneration of the Pope or the Virgin Mary, and so forth.

After this, you will be considered a full member of the Lutheran Church and will be expected to participate in the life of your congregation.

May the Lord bless you!

Being a pastor is a great responsibility. In addition to celebrating Mass, the pastor acts as a mentor to the parishioners, answers questions about the Faith, provides pastoral and psychological assistance to the faithful, administers the Sacraments and conducts church rituals. In order to become a pastor, one must be worthy of it, as Martin Luther notes. And in order to become worthy, one must undergo appropriate training, including theoretical training and practice. This is a long journey lasting several years. Humility on this path will show whether you are truly ready to become a good pastor for your future community. We will be happy to invite you to undergo selection at our seminary.

The most basic and simple thing to start with is Martin Luther’s Small Catechism. It briefly and clearly states the basics of the Faith. If you want to become part of a Lutheran church, the next step is to find the nearest congregation, visit it and talk to the pastor. Good luck!
